Utensils & Appliances (electric & non)
Part of The Underway Gourmet by Suzy O'Keefe
Your food processor probably won't make the short list, but a hand mixer
is a must. We have both an electric and a non-electric version on board.
Neither take up a lot of room and I use each regularly. Here are a few
more items that I recommend.
Non-electric
- Garlic press
- Lime squeezer
- Grater, the flat kind
- One large, deep skillet with a lid
- Kettle
- Heat Difuser for one burner
- Several good knives of various sizs
- Knife sharpener
- Hand mixer
- Silverware for daily use
- Chopsticks
- Camp-type silverware to take ashore for potlucks
- Wooden skewers for grilling
- Wine cork puller
- Vaccu-seal pump for resealing partial bottles of wine
- Several can openers so you always have a spare(don't buy the kind that
open the side of the lid instead of the top)
- Propane Grill on the aft deck
- Long tongs for the grill
- Large Cutting Board for fish cleaning
- Smaller Cutting Boards for the galley (you can get the very thin
flexable kind that fold into a funnel shape for ease in getting the veggies
into the pan and they just don't take up any room)
- several Butane Lighters, the refillable kind
- Butane refill canisters
- Assortment of stainless bowls
- Microwave safe dishes for cooking
- Pasta maker (you can have a pasta making party)
- Stainless Pressure Cooker
- Measuring cups, etc.
- Cupcake Tins (individual baking cups with paper liners) Inexpensive and
available in the baking aisle of your supermarket
- Assortment of slotted & wooden spoons, spatulas, etc.
- Funnel for galley use only (not the one that gets used for the engine
oil, yuck)
- Coffee mugs with lids and non-skid bottoms
- Acrilic wine glasses with non-skid bases
- Dishes & bowls with non-skid bottoms
- Pot Holders
- Nut cracker
Electric
- 110v blender that your inverter can handle (these are much less
expensive than the 12v kind and spare parts are easier to find)
- Small coffee grinder (ditto above)
- Small mixer
- 600 watt Microwave (the 1000 watt inverters can run these)
I recently discovered that the garlic press has another use. Use
it to mince fresh Ginger! Just cut chunks that fit into the cavity
with the "bark" side up and squeeze. The bark gets left behind in the
press for you to pick out and throw away. It's fast, easy, and much
more efficient than any other method.
Did I mention Non-Skid??? Carry a roll of it on board and cut pieces to
use as place mats on the salon table. Cut a piece to cover the top of the
nav station. Make coasters. Put sheets between breakable dishes.
We've even got a pizza pan on board. Amazingly enough, it fits inside
the oven and lives there all the time. I have carried an electric griddle
on board, but I'm not sure I could recommend one.
