Voyaging Inland

Part of Writes and Wrongs of Passage by Suzy O'Keefe

Cruisers often take advantage of opportunities to travel inland. Australia has the Aboriginal settlements and Ayer's Rock. Hawaii has Kiliwea Volcano. Mexico has Copper Canyon and Pyramids. The following drawings are from one such land voyage to the Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. There were several reasons for my solo trip. It was sort of a birthday present to myself, it gave Tim time alone on the boat, and I decided to assign myself the personal project of drawing in the style suggested by my artist friend Ann Sayre (Ansayre). I drew anything that interested me, from the fellow eating from his wife's plate to the great pyramids of Chichen Itza... it didn't matter what it was really. My goal was draw quickly, to use less lines, less pen strokes and never, NEVER use a pencil and eraser again. No drawing took more than 15 minutes and most took much less. I very much enjoyed my assignment...
