Part of Writes and Wrongs of Passage by Suzy O'Keefe
Zihuatanejo is my favorite city in Mexico. Located just a few miles south of the high rise tourist attraction of Ixtapa, it was a sleepy fishing village before Ixtapa was born. Now it still has those same qualities, but it also serves a home to most of the folks who work in the tourist industry. During my first visit there via sailboat, I decided that the cruising fleet could benefit from a "walking map" of the area that showed pertinent locations - laundromat, where to send a fax, buy ice cream, eat lunch, etc. The first incarnation of the map came into existence after heading north for the summer and I began handing out copies to anyone headed to Zihuat the following season. Before you knew it there were cruisers everywhere clambering for copies. It was the most amazing thing.
Displayed below is my most recent version (last updated by me circa early 1996) from my last stay in the anchorage. Barbara of the S/V Timeless entered the legend into her computer about that same time and assumed the responsibility of distributing the map during my absence, but somewhere along the line, it was decided that one of the local cruiser hangouts should be the keeper of the map and actually make a little money in the process. To get your very own updated map these days, just visit Noami's (no-A-mee's) Restaurant. I think it still costs 5 pesos.
